Does my website need an SSL certificate?

Does my website need HTTPS?

The trend is clear: more and more websites are switching to HTTPS. But, if your website is not yet SSL secured, should you also switch? In short: yes. Here are three reasons to choose HTTPS.

Reason 1: Chrome gets the ‘NOT SAFE’ badge by default

In recent years, Google Chrome has become the most used browser. For websites that do not have an SSL certificate, the message ‘not secure’ or ‘not secure’ is displayed by default in the address bar. This of course hurts the reliability of your website with visitors.

Not Secure

Does your website have an entry field such as a search function or a newsletter subscription? In that case, the website will receive a ‘NOT SAFE’ badge on every page where this is shown. For many websites, that’s every page.

Reason 2: It ensures better rankings in Google

Google clearly intends to switch every website to HTTPS. They do this not only to show end-users that you do not have your affairs in order (see above). You also get something in return.

Websites with an SSL certificate are rewarded with a higher position in Google search results. This is now one of the many factors Google uses to assess the quality of websites (and rank them in search results).

Admittedly, various studies have shown this does not have a very large impact on your position in Google. But: in competitive markets where every little bit helps, this can certainly be a reason to switch.

Reason 3: website SSL A safe website for your visitors

Websites with an HTTPS connection are more secure. It ensures that information sent cannot be intercepted by third parties.

Suppose a user of your website is in a public space on an unknown WiFi network (hotels, cafes) and fills in the contact form. When this is about HTTP, it is very easy for a hacker to read. A website SSL without an HTTPS connection is like a house without a lock: it is only a matter of time before someone takes advantage of this.

As a website owner, is it not your duty to ensure that people can use your website safely?
