How to Increase Internet Speed?

increase internet speed

There are several things you can try to increase internet speed is no longer as fast as before. Use this checklist:

1. Test with a new modem/router

The main cause of a slow internet connection is a bad or outdated modem. Think carefully: how long have you been using the modem at your home or business? Maybe it’s time to get a new one. The hardware in these devices has improved a lot in recent years, so this may be the easiest way to increase your internet speed.

2. Turn off/on your modem

If your modem is not that old, a simple reset often offers a solution. You do this by disconnecting the device from the power for at least 5 seconds and then turning it on again. This way of ‘power cycling’ ensures that existing speed problems are removed by (temporarily) removing the power from the device.

3. Shorten cables

(Old) telephone cables can adversely affect the speed of your internet connection. Replace old cables and make sure they are not unnecessarily long. In general, the shorter the cable, the stronger the signal that is transmitted.

4. Switch to 4G

Users of T-Mobile Unlimited subscription always have their own unlimited and super-fast WiFi connection in their pocket. Do you have a super slow WiFi connection at home (or at another location)? Then create a hotspot with your phone and connect to this network on your laptop or tablet. Through the best tested 4G network in the Netherlands from T-Mobile you generally often even have a faster connection than via WiFi.

5. Get a new cordless phone

Do you use an (old) cordless telephone on your fixed telephone connection at home? This device may interfere with your wireless internet connection at home. In other words, the radiation weakens your Wi-Fi signal. Replace the old device if you want to prevent this, or call your landline number on your mobile.

6. Connect your laptop to a cable

Wifi is a wonderful invention, but sometimes an old-fashioned cable connection is just that little bit faster. Is your desktop computer in a fixed place? Then consider connecting this device directly to the internet with a UTP cable.

7. Scan for viruses

When was the last time you ran a virus scan on your computer? It may well be that invisible software slows down your internet connection. Run a scan to find out and remove any spyware.

8. Close browser screens and programs

What applies to viruses also applies to programs that you use on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Due to the computing power that they often consume at the same time, your device but also your internet connection can become undesirably slower. Do you have a lot of browser screens or programs open at the same time? Then close it and restart your device if necessary. You can often use the internet faster afterward.

9. Do a speed test

You can do a so-called speed test of your internet connection via the Ookla site. This way you can see exactly how fast your internet connection is at the moment. Is the internet connection slower than it should be? Then contact your internet provider to find out what’s going on. Does your connection pass the test very quickly? Then something else is going on. Restart your device from scratch or download the latest software updates.

10. Update je operating system

Laptops, desktops, smartphones, and tablets also occasionally need a refresh. You do this by installing the latest version of their operating system (OS). For the iPhone this is iOS and most other smartphones run on Android or Windows. Also, computers have regular OS updates. Look under settings to see if there is an update for your OS, then download and install it. You should immediately notice that your device and internet speed are faster after the update.

11. Check for Interfering Devices

Is your modem standing next to many ‘disruptive devices’ such as a computer, tablet, speaker, or other electronic hardware? Then it is quite possible that these slow down your internet speed. Move the modem or these devices to a different location and see if this improves the situation.

12. Upgrade to Fiber

Is your internet connection still not fast enough after all these tips? Then it might be time for a fiber-optic connection at home. With fiber optic speeds of up to 1GB/s are achieved. Ideal for households and businesses with a lot of streaming, gaming, and work. You can read more about the benefits of T-Mobile fiber optic on this page.

13. Ask an expert

Are you unable to increase your internet speed? Then call your internet provider and make an appointment with a technician to come to your home. They often quickly solved the problem by installing a WiFi amplifier, for example. At T-Mobile Home, we offer the wifi service, where a mechanic comes to you to help you with this.
