Every year on 6th December, India celebrates the death anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar as Mahaparinirvan Day. A visionary leader, Ambedkar was the chief architect of the Constitution of India and a major social reformer. His tireless fight against caste-based discrimination and untouchability has left a lasting impact on Indian society.

Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in the Mhow military cantonment of Madhya Pradesh province of British India. He belonged to the Mahar caste of Hindu religion. At that time, there was a lot of discrimination against this caste. Due to this, he had to endure severe discrimination in the society. Due to this, he received his early education with great humiliation, but if we look today, we can say that Bhimrao Ambedkar was one of the most educated people of India before independence.
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar obtained his graduation degree from Bombay University and MA, PhD and LLD degrees from Columbia University. Apart from this, he also obtained MSc and DSc degrees. He was the first Indian to do a doctorate in economics.
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar had mastery in every field. He was a philosopher, writer, journalist, professor, economist, politician, academician, anthropologist, scholar, jurist and much more.
In 1990, he was posthumously awarded the country’s highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna. Apart from political equality, he kept fighting to achieve social equality. He came into the country’s politics and contributed to this field throughout his life.

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was not only a great thinker but also a great warrior. He showed the way to get free from all discriminatory elements like caste, race, colour. Despite being among the most educated and intellectual persons in the country, he also had to face the word untouchable in the society due to the caste system of Hindu religion. He tried a lot to change the casteist mentality but he could not change the mentality of the upper castes. On 13 October 1935, during a conference in Nasik, he announced his religious conversion. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb, struggled throughout his life to provide equality to the downtrodden classes in the country, to establish an egalitarian society in the country and to empower people legally.
He dedicated his life to the upliftment of the Dalit class. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar had said: “We have to make our own way. Political power cannot be the solution to the problems of the exploited. Their salvation lies in getting their rightful place in society”.

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, maker of the Constitution
Ambedkar advocated the principles of nationality, secularism and social justice along with social equality. Bhimrao Ambedkar is also called the Father of the Indian Constitution. Ambedkar said that humanity and social equality, non religion, is the foundation of the nation. Dr. Ambedkar’s vision was very broad.
He used to say that every person should try his best to achieve his goal. When the country became independent in 1947, everyone was worried about how the country would move forward now. The structure of the country had become democratic but what kind of democracy it would be was not yet decided. India had become independent but the Constitution was yet to be prepared and this task was not so easy. This important responsibility was given to a person who was a strong leader as well as a social reformer, a knower of law and economics and that great person was Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.
In 1947, he was made the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee. The Constitution was prepared with hard work and tireless efforts. After this, on 29 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly approved it.

When India gained independence in 1947, the first Prime Minister of independent India (Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru) appointed Babasaheb Ambedkar as the first Minister of Law and Justice; and two weeks later, he was made the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution.
The Indian Constitution guarantees 7 fundamental rights (First Draft) to the citizens of India, namely- Right to Equality, Right to Freedom, Right against Exploitation, Right to Freedom of Religion, Cultural and Educational Rights, Right to Property, and Right to Constitutional Remedies.
Babasaheb Ambedkar fought for wider economic and social rights for women and convinced the Assembly to introduce a system of reservation in jobs, educational institutions for members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes; a system that would provide equal opportunities.
The Constitution of India was ratified and adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949.
